My mother, being an avid reader, flooded my room with all kinds of books of different genres. Thanks to her, I grew up reading some fantastic books. I feel that it's important for your child to get into the habit of reading books frequently too. Though you can offer your kid books from various genres, it is up to him which one he finds interesting. But is it necessary? Why does your kid have to read the classics when there are so many news books out there for him? Here's why. 1. Room for more imagination Classics are a great way of improving your child's imaginative skills. It not only helps him develop his personality but also helps him in his academics. According to me, the best classics were written during the mid-1800s to mid-1900s. Authors like CS Lewis, Louisa May Alcott, Lewis Caroll, etc. are a must-read for kids. Make sure you choose age-appropriate books. The age of the characters in the books must be close to the age of your children so they can relate to the characters. 2. Learn new words If you read the classics and the modern books, you will notice that the language used in the classics is much stronger. Some of the words are not even used in our regular conversations. But it is important because it helps your kid to learn proper sentence structure and correct grammar. Since the classics have more scope for imagination, they help your kids become more creative; not only in terms of writing but also when they are self-introspecting. (Yes! Kids do that) It also improves their storytelling skills. 4. Makes them smarter Reading classics makes your kid smarter even academically. Your kids are at an age where they read something and enact the whole scene in their minds. They then sit and think about it and try to differentiate between what's right and wrong; what could have happened differently; what would they do if they were in a situation like a certain character. Reading classics helps in their personality development. 5. Improves their reading skills Some of us struggle to read or finish reading quickly without skipping a word or worse, an entire paragraph. If your kids can manage to read the classics without any trouble, books written by modern authors would be a piece of cake. Read: 10 ways to help your child learn to read.
